AVIF usually makes a much smaller file than a JPEG of similar visual quality, which is why image CDNs and site build pipelines now serve it to modern browsers. The side effect is that "Save image as" hands you an .avif file. Android 12 and later can decode AVIF, some gallery and editing apps export it, and many design tools export it. The file is then fine in a browser and awkward everywhere else. Windows Photos needs the AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store before it shows anything. Many email previews show nothing. Plenty of upload forms, job portals, and government portals reject the extension outright. WordPress did not accept AVIF uploads before 6.5, older image editors do not open the format, and most print shops still ask for a JPG. This page converts the file where it already is. And an animated AVIF gives you its first frame only. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### Does this upload my files? No. Your browser's own AVIF decoder reads the file, and a WebAssembly decoder built from libavif takes over on the device when the browser cannot. The image bytes never leave your machine. You can verify it yourself: open your browser's network panel before you drop a file, and you will see no request carrying the image. ### What is an AVIF file, and where did mine come from? AVIF is a modern image format built on the AV1 video codec, and it usually makes a much smaller file than a JPEG of similar visual quality. Image CDNs and site build pipelines serve it to browsers that support it, so "Save image as" often hands you an .avif. Android 12 and later can decode AVIF, some gallery and editing apps export it, Apple Photos on iOS 16 and later can display it, and many design tools export it. ### Why will Windows not open my AVIF file? Windows Photos needs the AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store before it can show an AVIF. Many email previews do not render it at all. Converting to JPG avoids the question entirely, because every one of those opens a JPG already. ### Can I convert several files at once? Yes. Drop as many as you like. They are converted one after another so a large batch does not exhaust memory, and when more than one has finished you get a single avif-jpg.zip. If one file fails, it is listed by name and the rest still convert and download. ### Should I choose JPG, PNG, or WebP? JPG is the default because it is what upload forms, Windows, and print shops expect. Choose PNG when you need a lossless copy or the image has transparency. Choose WebP for a web page, where it keeps transparency and stays smaller than a PNG. The JPEG quality slider applies to JPG and WebP output and is ignored for PNG. ### What happens to the metadata and the GPS location? They are removed, and that is deliberate. Conversion paints the decoded image onto a canvas, and a canvas carries no metadata at all, so EXIF, XMP, and any GPS coordinates are dropped from the file you download. It cannot be switched off here. Your original .avif file keeps all of it. ### What happens to transparency? AVIF supports transparency and JPG does not, so transparent areas become white in a JPG. If you need the transparency, pick PNG or WebP in Options before you download. ### Why did one of my files fail, or come out looking different? An animated AVIF — an image sequence, usually named .avifs or carrying the avis brand — gives its first frame only. HDR and 10-bit or 12-bit AVIF files decode through the WebAssembly fallback when your browser's decoder cannot read them; the output is 8-bit SDR, so HDR highlights are tone-mapped or clipped by the decoder. A file with an .avif name that is really a JPEG or PNG is passed through unchanged when it already matches the format you asked for, and otherwise reported as "not an AVIF image". ### Is there a file size limit? There is no limit imposed by this page, because nothing is uploaded. The practical ceiling is your device's memory. A very large batch on an older phone is the case most likely to run out. ### Does it cost anything or need an account?
