# DOCX to TXT

Turn Word .docx files into plain UTF-8 text. Copy the text, or download a .txt for each file; drop several and get them in one .zip. Runs in your browser.

**Use this tool:** [DOCX to TXT](https://findutils.com/convert/docx-to-txt/)

## Programmatic access

- No REST or MCP id: use this tool on its page; there is no execute endpoint to call.

## Why convert a Word file to plain text?

Sometimes only the words matter: a script that searches documents, a plain-text editor, a prompt, a commit message, a CMS field that rejects pasted formatting. Getting the text out of Word means Save As, a choice of encoding and a dialog for every file, or a copy and paste that drags fonts and hidden formatting along. This page reads the .docx and hands back clean UTF-8 text, one .txt per file.

## Tips

- A line break typed with Shift+Enter stays a line break, and a tab stays a tab.
- Each table row comes out as one line, with its cells separated by tabs, so a table pastes into a spreadsheet in columns.
- Tracked changes are read as Word shows them with all changes accepted: inserted words are in, deleted words are out. To resolve them in the .docx itself, use DOCX Accept Track Changes.
- Need headings and lists kept? DOCX to Markdown keeps the structure; this page keeps only the words.
- The .txt is UTF-8 with no byte order mark and LF line endings, which every current editor opens, including Notepad.
- A scanned page is an image, not text. A document made of scans comes out empty here; it needs OCR instead.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I convert a DOCX file to TXT?

Drop the .docx on this page and press Download. The text is extracted in your browser as soon as the file is read, and the .txt is named after the document, so report.docx becomes report.txt. Drop several files to get a .zip of .txt files.

### Is my document uploaded?

No. The .docx is opened in your browser and the text is extracted there. Nothing is sent to a server, which you can check in the network tab of your browser's developer tools.

### What is kept and what is removed?

The words are kept, with paragraph breaks, line breaks, tabs and table rows. Fonts, bold, italic, heading styles, images, comments, headers, footers and list bullets or numbers are removed, because plain text has no way to carry them.

### Which encoding does the .txt use?

UTF-8 without a byte order mark, with LF line endings. Accented letters, other scripts and emoji come through as they are, and current editors on Windows, macOS and Linux open it directly.

### What happens to tables?

Each table row becomes one line, with its cells separated by tabs. A cell with several paragraphs is joined into one line with spaces, so the columns stay aligned when the text is pasted into a spreadsheet.

### What happens to tracked changes?

They are read as Word shows the document with all changes accepted: inserted text is included and deleted text is left out. The .docx itself is not changed; to resolve the changes in the Word file, use DOCX Accept Track Changes.

### Can it convert an old .doc file or a password-protected document?

No. An old .doc is a different binary format and a password-protected .docx is encrypted, so both are refused with a message. Open the file in Word, save it as an unprotected .docx, and drop the new copy.

### Why is the result empty?

The body of the document holds no text. That happens when the pages are scanned images or the content is all pictures or charts. This page does not do OCR, so a scanned document needs an OCR tool instead.

### How is this different from DOCX to Markdown?

DOCX to Markdown keeps structure: headings, lists, links, bold and tables written as Markdown. DOCX to TXT keeps only the words and the line structure, with no markup characters, for places where formatting syntax would get in the way.
