# LIVP Extract

Unpack an iPhone Live Photo (.livp) into its HEIC still and MOV video, with an optional JPG copy of the still. The file is opened in your browser and is not uploaded.

**Use this tool:** [LIVP Extract](https://findutils.com/convert/livp-extract/)

## Programmatic access

- No REST or MCP id: use this tool on its page; there is no execute endpoint to call.

## Why can't Windows open a .livp file?

A Live Photo is two files that an iPhone shows as one: a still photo and a short video. When a Live Photo leaves Apple's apps it sometimes arrives as a single .livp file, and Windows and Android have no program registered for that extension. Inside, it is an ordinary ZIP archive holding the still, usually a .HEIC, and the clip, a .MOV. The manual way out is to rename the file to .zip, extract it, and then find something that opens HEIC. LIVP Extract does all of that in one drop: it opens the package in your browser, lists the parts and their sizes, and can make a JPG copy of the still for apps that cannot read HEIC.

## Tips

- Turn off Include the video clip when you only want the photo. Download all then gives you the still and its JPG copy.
- If the JPG copy fails, the HEIC is still there. Some HDR and 10-bit HEIC files cannot be decoded in a browser.
- The HEIC and MOV come out byte for byte, so any location data the camera recorded stays in them. The JPG copy is made through a canvas and carries no metadata.
- A .livp renamed to .zip opens here too. So does a ZIP that holds several .livp files.
- This page unpacks; it does not convert the MOV video or rebuild a Live Photo.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a .livp file?

A .livp file is an iPhone Live Photo packed into one file. It is a ZIP archive that holds the still photo, usually a .HEIC and sometimes a .JPG, and a short .MOV video. You usually meet one when a Live Photo is downloaded or shared outside Apple's apps, on Windows or Android.

### How do I open a .livp file on Windows?

Drop it on this page. You get the still photo and the MOV clip as separate downloads, and with Also convert the still to JPG on, a JPG copy that every Windows app opens. Without a tool, rename the file to .zip and extract it, then open the HEIC with an app that supports it.

### Is my Live Photo uploaded?

No. The .livp file is opened in your browser on this page, and the photo and video are not uploaded. LIVP Extract has no API version; it works only in the page.

### Why did the JPG conversion fail?

Some HEIC stills, mostly HDR and 10-bit ones, cannot be decoded in a browser. When that happens the page says so, and the original HEIC and the MOV clip are still there to download. Open the HEIC in Photos on a phone or Mac to export a JPEG instead.

### Can it turn a Live Photo into a GIF or an MP4?

No. The MOV clip comes out exactly as it was stored. This page unpacks the package; it does not convert video and does not rebuild a Live Photo.

### Can I unpack several Live Photos at once?

Yes. Drop several .livp files, or one ZIP that holds them. Each one gets its own card, and Download all as ZIP gives you one archive with a folder per Live Photo.

### Does the photo keep its location and date?

The HEIC and MOV are copied out byte for byte, so they keep whatever the camera recorded, including GPS coordinates when location was on. The JPG copy is made through a canvas, which carries no metadata, so it has no location or camera data. To clean a photo you keep, use the [EXIF Remover](https://findutils.com/security/exif-remover/).

### Is there a file size limit?

Yes, 1 GB per file. The browser holds the package and its parts in memory, and a single Live Photo is far smaller than that.
