# SRT to TXT

Turn an .srt or .vtt subtitle file into a plain-text transcript. Cue numbers, timestamps and formatting tags are removed; the text stays in order.

## Programmatic access

- REST id `srt-to-txt`: POST https://api.findutils.com/api/tools/srt-to-txt/execute (reference: https://findutils.com/api/srt-to-txt/)

## Why convert SRT to TXT?

A subtitle file already holds everything that was said in a video, but it is broken up by cue numbers, timing lines and formatting tags that get in the way when you want to read, quote, search or edit the words. Converting it to plain text removes that scaffolding and keeps the dialogue in its original order, so a caption track becomes a transcript you can paste into a document, an article draft or a notes app.

## Tips

- A cue's own line breaks are layout, not meaning, so the two lines of a cue are joined with a space.
- WebVTT files work the same way: the WEBVTT header, NOTE blocks and cue identifiers are skipped, and voice tags such as <v Anna> are removed with the other tags.
- If a timing line cannot be read, the error names its line number and the editor highlights it, so you can fix it in place.
- Words are counted on the finished transcript, after tags are removed.
- Need to clean the subtitles but keep them as subtitles? Use the Subtitle Cleaner instead, which keeps the timings.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I convert an SRT file to TXT?

Drop the .srt file on this page, or paste its contents. The cue numbers and timestamps are removed straight away and the transcript appears on the right; use Copy or Download .txt to keep it. You can choose a blank line between cues or one paragraph.

### Does it work with WebVTT (.vtt) files?

Yes. VTT files are read the same way: the WEBVTT header, NOTE comments and cue identifiers are skipped and only the cue text is kept.

### Is my subtitle file uploaded?

No. The file is read and converted in your browser, and the transcript is created there too. The page itself loads the usual site scripts, but your subtitle text is not sent anywhere.

### Does it change or summarize the text?

No. The output is the cue text in its original order. The only changes are removing tags you chose to strip and joining a cue's own line breaks with a space.

### What is the difference between the two join styles?

Blank line between cues puts each cue in its own paragraph, which keeps the rhythm of the dialogue. One paragraph joins every cue with a space into a single block of running text.

### Why does it say nothing is left after removing tags?

Every cue in the file contained only formatting — for example, sign or positioning cues that are just ASS override codes or empty <i></i> tags. Turn off the strip switches to keep that raw text.

### What does "bad timestamp on line N" mean?

The timing line at that line of the file could not be read, for example 00:00:10.8 instead of 00:00:10,800. The editor highlights the line so you can fix it and the transcript updates as you type.

### Can I use this from a script or an AI assistant?

Yes. The same conversion is available as srt_to_txt through the FindUtils REST API and MCP server. An API call sends your subtitle text to FindUtils over TLS to be converted; it is not stored or logged.

### Is there a size limit?

Up to about 10 MB of subtitle text, which is far more than a feature-length caption track. Very long transcripts show the beginning in the preview, but Copy and Download always include the full text.

### Can it make a transcript from a video with no subtitles?

No. This tool works only with text that is already in a subtitle file; it does not transcribe audio. If the video has an embedded caption track, extract it first with the Subtitle Extractor.
