A social media mockup is a picture of a post or a conversation that never happened: a tweet for a pitch deck, a WhatsApp exchange for a tutorial, a Slack thread for product docs. FindUtils has nine browser-based mockup generators on the [Mockups hub](/mockups/). Each one downloads a PNG with a faint diagonal FindUtils.com watermark that cannot be turned off, because a screenshot that looks real should say that it is not.

This guide covers which generator fits which job, how an export is made, what the watermark does and does not do, and how to use the images without misleading anyone. FindUtils.com is a website of browser tools and is not the GNU findutils package.

## Which Mockup Generator Fits the Job?

Pick the platform the reader will recognise, then the format. The nine generators split into feed posts, chats and frames:

| You need | Generator | What it draws |
|---|---|---|
| A post or a 2 to 5 post thread on X | [Twitter/X Post Generator](/mockups/twitter-post-generator/) | Profile, verified badge, text, image, time, views and engagement row |
| An Instagram feed post | [Instagram Post Generator](/mockups/instagram-post-generator/) | Square photo, caption, likes, location and comments |
| An Instagram story | [Instagram Story Mockup](/mockups/instagram-story-mockup/) | 9:16 frame, progress bars, text overlays, reply bar |
| A LinkedIn feed post | [LinkedIn Post Mockup](/mockups/linkedin-post-mockup/) | Author, headline, text with a "…more" collapse, image, reactions, comments, reposts |
| A WhatsApp chat | [WhatsApp Chat Generator](/mockups/whatsapp-chat-generator/) | One-on-one chat with read-receipt ticks, times and photo messages |
| An iMessage chat | [iMessage Chat Generator](/mockups/imessage-chat-generator/) | One-on-one or group chat, blue or green bubbles, tapbacks |
| A team chat | [Slack Chat Mockup](/mockups/slack-chat-mockup/) | Channel or DM, grouped messages, reactions, a thread-replies line |
| An AI chat for a tutorial | [ChatGPT Screenshot Generator](/mockups/chatgpt-screenshot-generator/) | Conversation with code blocks, bold text and an editable model label |
| Any screenshot in a phone, tablet or browser | [Device Frame Mockup](/mockups/device-frame-mockup/) | A drawn frame around your own image, on a transparent, solid or gradient background |

Two neighbours are text tools, not mockups. The [Thread Generator](/generate/thread-generator/) splits a long text into thread-sized posts, and the [LinkedIn Post Generator](/generate/linkedin-post-generator/) writes post copy from templates. Write the words there, then draw the screenshot with a mockup generator.

## How to Make a Mockup

Every generator works the same way: controls on the left, a live preview on the right, and one download button under the preview.

### Step 1: Open the generator for your platform

Choose from the table above. Each page opens with sample content already filled in, so you can see a finished preview before you change anything.

### Step 2: Set the identity

Enter the display name and handle, and upload a profile picture if you want one. Pictures are read by your browser with a file reader and never uploaded. Without a picture, the generators draw a plain initial.

### Step 3: Write the content

Type the post, the messages or the story text. Line breaks are kept. The Twitter/X generator counts toward the 280-character limit, and its Thread format stacks 2 to 5 posts in one image with the reply line between the avatars.

### Step 4: Set the numbers and the theme

Engagement counts, times and statuses are plain inputs: you decide them. Most generators also have a light and a dark theme that belongs to the mockup itself, independent of the site's theme.

### Step 5: Download the PNG

Click Download Image. The preview is captured at twice its on-screen size, the watermark is drawn into the pixels, and the file is saved as a PNG. Nothing is sent to a server at any point.

## What the Watermark Does

The watermark is a faint diagonal "FindUtils.com" band drawn into the exported image itself. It is not a separate layer and not metadata.

- **It sits across the middle.** A corner mark disappears with one crop. A band through the centre can only be removed by losing the centre of the screenshot.
- **Tall images get more than one band.** A thread, a story or a phone frame gets one band for each square of its height, so no part of a tall image is left unmarked.
- **It reads on light and dark mockups.** The mark is drawn twice, dark over a slightly offset light edge, so it shows on a white card and on a dark chat.
- **It cannot be turned off.** There is no setting and no paid tier that removes it.

The watermark is a disclosure, not a lock. Someone determined to fake a screenshot can do it with an image editor, and no mark prevents that. What the watermark does is make the honest use the default: a mockup made here carries a label saying what it is wherever it ends up.

## Mockup Generator vs Editing a Real Screenshot vs a Design File

There are three ways to get a picture of a post that does not exist. They differ in effort, in control, and in how honest the result is by default.

| | Mockup generator | Edited real screenshot | Design file (for example Figma) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time to a first image | Under a minute | Minutes to hours | Hours, unless a template exists |
| Needs an account | No | No | Usually |
| Marked as a mockup | Yes, always (FindUtils) | No | Only if you add it |
| Typeface | Your system font | The platform's own | Whatever you install |
| Layout control | The generator's fields only | Anything, pixel by pixel | Anything |
| Risk of being mistaken for real | Low, because of the mark | High | Depends on you |

Mockup generators trade control for speed. If a pitch needs the exact platform typeface or an unusual layout, a design file is the better tool. For slides, tutorials, docs and client previews, a generator gets there faster and labels the result.

## Where the Line Is

A mockup is fine when everyone who sees it knows it is an example. It becomes a problem when it is used to put words in a real person's mouth or to make a claim look confirmed.

- **Fine:** a pitch deck showing what a campaign post will look like, a course slide about thread structure, product docs showing a Slack integration, a UX case study, a tutorial about prompts.
- **Not fine:** a fake post attributed to a real person or brand, a fabricated conversation used as evidence, a "screenshot" of a statement nobody made.

The platform designs these generators imitate belong to their owners. X, Instagram, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, iMessage, Slack and ChatGPT are trademarks of their respective companies, and FindUtils is not affiliated with any of them. The images carry no licence fee and need no attribution; the one condition is that the watermark stays visible.

## Common Mistakes

### Mistake 1: Using a real person's name and photo

A mockup with a real person's identity reads as a claim about that person. Use an invented name, or your own, and an illustrative picture.

### Mistake 2: Cropping the image to hide the mark

The band runs through the centre, so cropping it away removes the content too. If the mark gets in the way of a design, the design needs a different kind of image.

### Mistake 3: Expecting the platform's own font

The generators use your system font, so a close look tells them apart from the real apps. The layout and colours follow each platform; the typeface does not.

### Mistake 4: Exporting from a narrow window

The PNG is twice the size the preview is drawn at. On a phone the preview is narrower, so the file is smaller. For slides, export from a desktop-width window.

## FAQ

**Q: Are the FindUtils mockup generators free?**
A: Yes. All nine run in your browser with no signup and no usage limit. Images you add are read locally and never uploaded.

**Q: Can I remove the watermark?**
A: No. Every exported PNG carries a faint diagonal FindUtils.com watermark drawn into the image. There is no setting or paid option that removes it, because an image that can be mistaken for a real post should say what it is.

**Q: Can I use the mockups commercially?**
A: Yes, in presentations, marketing material, articles and teaching, with no fee and no attribution, as long as the watermark stays visible. FindUtils cannot grant rights to the platforms' own trademarks.

**Q: Can I make a Twitter thread mockup?**
A: Yes. In the Twitter/X Post Generator, switch Format to Thread and add 2 to 5 posts. They stack in one image with the reply line between the avatars, each with its own text and optional image.

**Q: Can I make a group chat mockup?**
A: Yes, in the iMessage Chat Generator, with two to six other participants, and in the Slack Chat Mockup, which draws a channel. The WhatsApp Chat Generator is one-on-one only.

**Q: How do I put an app screenshot inside a phone frame?**
A: Use the Device Frame Mockup: drop, paste or choose a screenshot, pick a phone, an Android phone, a tablet or a browser window, set the background and padding, and download the PNG. A transparent background stays transparent in the file.

**Q: Is this the GNU findutils package?**
A: No. FindUtils.com is a website of browser tools. GNU findutils is the Unix package that provides `find`, `locate` and `xargs`.
