# IP Address Lookup

See your own public IP's location, ISP, timezone and network details, free and with no signup. Looking up other IPv4/IPv6 addresses needs a free IPFast API key.

**Use this tool:** [IP Address Lookup](https://findutils.com/network/ip-address-lookup/)

## Programmatic access

- Browser-only: this tool works on a file, the DOM, or a browser API and has no REST or MCP id.

## What can you learn from an IP address?

An IP address can reveal the approximate geographic location, internet service provider, and organization associated with a network. This is useful for developers debugging connections, security analysts investigating threats, or anyone curious about their network information.

## Tips for Accurate IP Lookups

- Use the public IP address, not a private one (192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x). Private addresses are only valid within local networks and cannot be geolocated.
- Keep in mind that VPN and proxy users will show the location of the VPN server, not their real physical location.
- IPv6 geolocation can be less accurate than IPv4 because many databases have not fully mapped the larger address space yet.
- City-level accuracy is typically 80-90%. For precise location data, combine IP geolocation with other signals like GPS or Wi-Fi positioning.
- Cross-reference IP lookup results with a DNS lookup or WHOIS query to get a more complete picture of the network owner and domain associations.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What information can I find about an IP address?

Geographic location (country, city, region, postal code and coordinates), timezone, the ISP and the ASN organization behind the network, plus country metadata such as currency and calling code. VPN, proxy and hosting detection is not part of this page; it is an IPFast API feature.

### How accurate is IP geolocation?

IP geolocation is typically accurate at the country level (99%) and city level (80-90%). Accuracy varies based on ISP data and whether the user is using VPN or proxy services.

### Can I look up my own IP address?

Yes, and you do not have to ask: your public IP address is detected and displayed the moment the page loads, with its geolocation and ISP details. The "What's my IP?" button returns to it after you have looked up a different address. This is the IP that websites and servers see when you connect.

### What's the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?

IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses (like 192.168.1.1) allowing roughly 4.3 billion unique addresses. IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses (like 2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334) providing a virtually unlimited pool. Our tool supports both formats.

### Does this tool require a signup?

Checking your own IP address needs no signup at all. Looking up other addresses runs on the IPFast API, whose free plan allows 10 lookups an hour and 200 a month once you register a key.

### Can IP geolocation reveal my exact home address?

No. IP geolocation resolves to an approximate area, usually at the city or district level. It cannot pinpoint a specific street address or building. The coordinates returned represent the general area served by that IP block.

### Why does my IP location show a different city than where I am?

ISPs sometimes route traffic through regional hubs, so the geolocation database may map your IP to the nearest hub city rather than your exact location. Using a VPN or proxy will also shift the reported location to the server's position.

### Can I look up a private IP address like 192.168.1.1?

Private IP addresses (10.x.x.x, 172.16-31.x.x, 192.168.x.x) are used within local networks and are not routable on the public internet. Our tool can only geolocate public IP addresses that are visible outside your network.

### How can I use IP lookup data for security purposes?

You can trace the origin of suspicious login attempts, identify the hosting provider behind spam or attack traffic, and verify that your server's IP resolves to the expected location. Combine results with DNS and WHOIS lookups for a thorough investigation.

### Does looking up an IP address notify its owner?

No. IP geolocation queries are passive lookups against a database. The owner of the IP address is never contacted or notified when you perform a lookup.

### What leaves my device when I look up an IP?

The address being looked up. The page sends it to ip.findutils.com, the FindUtils geolocation service, which returns location, ISP, and network data and keeps standard request logs. When you check your own address, the page also asks ipv4.icanhazip.com for your IPv4 address. The map preview loads from OpenStreetMap with the result's coordinates. No lookup history is stored in your browser.
