# Protect PDF

Add a password to a PDF so it opens only for people who have it. AES-256 encryption, optional print and copy limits, done in your browser. No signup.

**Use this tool:** [Protect PDF](https://findutils.com/pdf/pdf-protect/)

## Programmatic access

- No REST or MCP id: use this tool on its page; there is no execute endpoint to call.

## Why password-protect a PDF?

A PDF sent by email or shared from a drive can be forwarded anywhere. A password means the file opens only for people you give it to. Protect PDF encrypts the whole file with AES-256 on this page, so the document and the password stay in your browser, and it can also ask PDF readers not to print, copy or edit the file.

## Protect PDF Tips

- Send the password a different way from the file, for example by phone or a chat app, not in the same email.
- Use a long password. A few random words joined together are easier to type and harder to guess than a short one.
- Permission limits depend on the reader honouring them. For a document that must not be printed or copied, do not rely on them alone.
- Keep an unprotected copy somewhere safe. If the password is lost, the protected file cannot be opened.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How does Protect PDF lock a file?

It encrypts the whole PDF with AES-256 using the password you choose, through the PDF standard security handler. A reader then asks for that password before it shows any page. The encryption runs in your browser on this page; the file and the password are not uploaded.

### Can a forgotten password be recovered?

No. FindUtils never sees the password, and AES-256 encryption cannot be reversed without it. Keep the password somewhere safe, and keep an unprotected copy of the original if you may need it later.

### Do the print and copy permissions really stop people?

Only in readers that honour them. The permissions are flags stored in the file; many readers respect them, but some programs ignore them. Encryption protects the content from people without the password; the permissions are a request to people who have it.

### Is a password the same as a watermark?

No. A password stops the file from opening without it. A watermark leaves the file open and stamps every page with text such as CONFIDENTIAL. For a document you share widely, a watermark marks it; for one only some people should read, a password keeps it closed. The [PDF Watermark](https://findutils.com/pdf/pdf-watermark/) tool adds the stamp.

### Will every PDF reader open the protected file?

Readers that support AES-256 encryption, which the PDF 2.0 standard recommends, open it after asking for the password. Very old readers that predate AES-256 cannot open it.

### What if my PDF already has a password?

Protect PDF does not add a second password. Remove the current one first with [Unlock PDF](https://findutils.com/pdf/pdf-unlock/) if you know it, then protect the file again.

### Is my PDF uploaded?

No. On this page the PDF is read and encrypted in your browser, and the password is never sent anywhere. Protect PDF has no API version for the same reason: an API call would have to send the password.

### Is there a file size limit?

There is no fixed limit. Your browser's memory is the ceiling, so a very large scanned PDF can take a moment on a phone.
