# Secure Password Generator

Generate strong, random passwords in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server and no password is stored. Set the length, pick the character sets, and check the strength as you type.

**Use this tool:** [Secure Password Generator](https://findutils.com/security/password-generator/)

## Programmatic access

- REST id `password-generate`: POST https://api.findutils.com/api/tools/password-generate/execute (reference: https://findutils.com/api/password-generate/)
- MCP tool `password_generate` on https://mcp.findutils.com (reference: https://findutils.com/mcp/password-generate/)

## Why use a random password generator?

Humans are terrible at being random. We tend to use patterns, birthdays, and common words that hackers can easily guess using dictionary attacks. A random password generator creates unpredictable strings of characters that are mathematically much harder to crack.

## Tips for better security:

- Use a different password for every account.
- Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) whenever possible.
- Use a password manager to store these complex passwords securely.
- Aim for at least 12 characters; 16 is ideal.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is this password generator safe to use?

Yes, all passwords are generated entirely in your browser using cryptographically secure randomness (Web Crypto API). No passwords are ever sent to our servers or stored anywhere.

### What makes a password strong?

A strong password is long (16+ characters), uses a mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols, and avoids common patterns or dictionary words. Our generator creates passwords with high entropy that are mathematically difficult to crack.

### Should I use a different password for every account?

Absolutely. Using unique passwords for each account ensures that if one password is compromised, your other accounts remain secure. Use a password manager to keep track of all your passwords.

### What is a memorable password and when should I use it?

Memorable passwords use random words separated by characters (like 'correct-horse-battery-staple'). They're easier to type and remember while still being secure. Use them for accounts you need to type manually, like your computer login.

### How long does it take to crack a password?

It depends on length and complexity. A simple 8-character password can be cracked in hours, while a 16-character password with mixed characters would take centuries with current technology. Our tool shows estimated crack time for each password.

### What is password entropy and why does it matter?

Password entropy is a measure of randomness expressed in bits. Higher entropy means more possible combinations an attacker must try. A 12-character password using uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols has roughly 79 bits of entropy, which would take billions of years to brute-force with current hardware.

### Is a longer password always better than a complex one?

Length contributes more to password strength than complexity alone. A 20-character lowercase password has more entropy than an 8-character password with every character type. That said, combining both length and complexity provides the strongest protection.

### Does this tool store or transmit my generated passwords?

No. FindUtils Password Generator runs 100% client-side in your browser. No network requests are made during password generation. Your passwords exist only in your browser's memory and clipboard. We have no server-side logging of any kind.

### What does NIST recommend for password security?

NIST Special Publication 800-63B recommends passwords of at least 8 characters, encourages longer passphrases, and advises against mandatory complexity rules that lead to predictable patterns. It also recommends screening passwords against known breach databases and supporting paste functionality in password fields.

### Can I use this generator for API keys and encryption secrets?

Yes. Use the Random mode with maximum length and all character types enabled to generate high-entropy strings suitable for API keys, webhook secrets, JWT signing keys, and encryption passphrases. For dedicated key generation with hex and base64 output formats, try our Random Key Generator tool.
