# Text Encryption Tool

Encrypt and decrypt text with AES-256-GCM and a password. On this page it runs in your browser with the Web Crypto API, so nothing you type is uploaded.

**Use this tool:** [Text Encryption Tool](https://findutils.com/security/text-encryption/)

## Programmatic access

- REST id `text-encryption`: POST https://api.findutils.com/api/tools/text-encryption/execute (reference: https://findutils.com/api/text-encryption/)
- MCP tool `text_encryption` on https://mcp.findutils.com (reference: https://findutils.com/mcp/text-encryption/)

## Why Use Text Encryption?

Protect sensitive information like passwords, API keys, personal notes, or confidential messages. Our tool uses AES-256-GCM, the same encryption standard used by governments and financial institutions. All encryption happens locally in your browser - your data never leaves your device.

## Tips for Strong Encryption

- Use a unique password for each encrypted message. Reusing passwords across multiple encryptions weakens your overall security posture.
- Generate passwords with our Password Generator tool rather than choosing them manually. Human-chosen passwords are predictable and easier to crack.
- Never share your encryption password through the same channel as the ciphertext. Send the password via a different medium such as a phone call or a separate messaging app.
- Store your encryption passwords in a password manager. If you lose the password, the encrypted data is permanently unrecoverable by design.
- Verify decryption immediately after encrypting to confirm you have the correct password saved before deleting the original plaintext.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is this encryption secure?

Yes. It uses AES-256-GCM, a widely used authenticated encryption standard, and derives the key from your password with PBKDF2 (SHA-256, 100,000 iterations) to slow down brute-force guessing. The strength still depends on your password: use a long, unique one.

### What if I forget my password?

The encrypted data cannot be recovered without the correct password. There is no backdoor or recovery option - this is by design for maximum security.

### Is my data sent to your servers?

No, not on this page. All encryption and decryption on this page happens locally in your browser using the Web Crypto API, and your data never leaves your device. The REST and MCP API is separate: a call there sends your text and password to FindUtils over TLS to be encrypted or decrypted on the server, and neither is stored or logged.

### What is AES-256-GCM?

AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) with 256-bit key length and GCM (Galois/Counter Mode) provides both encryption and authentication. It's the gold standard for symmetric encryption.

### Can I use this for files?

This tool is designed for text encryption. For file encryption, we recommend using dedicated file encryption software like VeraCrypt or 7-Zip with AES encryption.

### What is the difference between symmetric and asymmetric encryption?

Symmetric encryption like AES-256 uses one shared password to both encrypt and decrypt data. Asymmetric encryption such as PGP uses a key pair: a public key to encrypt and a private key to decrypt. Symmetric encryption is faster and ideal for personal data protection, while asymmetric encryption is better for secure communication between two parties.

### How long should my encryption password be?

Use at least 12 characters combining uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols. Longer passphrases of 4-6 random words are even stronger and easier to remember. You can use our Password Generator to create a cryptographically secure password.

### Can someone crack AES-256 encryption?

AES-256 is computationally infeasible to crack with current technology. A brute-force attack would require more time than the age of the universe. The weakest link is always the password itself, which is why choosing a strong password is critical.

### Is it safe to encrypt text in a web browser?

Yes, when the tool runs client-side using the Web Crypto API, as this page does. Nothing you type on this page is transmitted to any server. The encryption and decryption happen in your browser's built-in cryptographic engine, which is the same technology used by online banking and secure websites.

### Can I share encrypted text with someone else?

Yes. Copy the encrypted output and send it through any channel such as email, chat, or a note. The recipient pastes the ciphertext into the decrypt field, enters the same password you used, and recovers the original message. Share the password through a separate, secure channel.
