Frequently Asked Questions

1

Can these tools handle large text documents?

Yes. Since all FindUtils text tools run entirely in your browser using client-side JavaScript, they can process documents of virtually any size that fits in your browser's available memory. Most users can comfortably process documents with tens of thousands of words, which covers typical use cases like academic papers, book manuscripts, legal documents, and code files. The word counter updates in real-time as you type or paste text, handling long documents without lag. The diff checker can compare two large documents efficiently by processing them in chunks. For extremely large files over 10MB, performance may vary depending on your device's RAM. Close other browser tabs to free up memory for processing very large documents.

2

What citation formats are supported?

The FindUtils citation generator supports 6 major academic citation formats: APA 7th Edition, MLA 9th Edition, Chicago Manual of Style 17th Edition, Harvard referencing, IEEE, and Vancouver. Each format is implemented following the official style guide specifications for proper formatting of author names, publication dates, titles, publishers, DOIs, and URLs. The tool can generate citations for books, journal articles, websites, conference papers, and other source types. You can enter source details manually or paste a URL for automatic metadata extraction. Citations are generated with proper italicization, hanging indentation, and punctuation. You can copy individual citations or export a complete bibliography in your chosen format.

How does the readability calculator work?

The FindUtils readability calculator analyzes your text using multiple established readability formulas simultaneously. It computes the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, which estimates the U.S. school grade level needed to understand the text. The Flesch Reading Ease score rates text on a 0-100 scale where higher scores indicate easier readability. The Gunning Fog Index estimates years of formal education needed. The Coleman-Liau Index uses character counts instead of syllable counts for more consistent results. The tool also calculates the Automated Readability Index (ARI) and SMOG Grade. Each score is displayed with an interpretation explaining what the score means in practical terms, along with suggestions for improving readability.

4

Is my text data kept private?

Yes. All 13 FindUtils text tools process your content entirely in your browser using client-side JavaScript. Your text, documents, citations, and any other content you enter is never sent to any server, never stored in any database, and never accessible to FindUtils or any third party. This is verified by the fact that all processing happens on your local device. You can confirm this by monitoring your browser's network tab while using any text tool. This privacy-first approach makes FindUtils safe for processing confidential documents, legal text, academic papers before publication, proprietary business content, personal journals, and any other text that should remain private.
