One word per line. Add a meaning after a colon to use it in the matching activity.

Activities

Paste your word list

One word per line, like a spelling list. The worksheet appears here as you type.

How to make a vocabulary worksheet

  1. Paste the word list

Type or paste one word per line. To use the matching activity, add the meaning after a colon, like "giraffe: the tallest animal".
  2. Choose the activities

Tick any of Scramble, Missing letters, Match definitions, Word search and Trace. They appear on the sheet in that order.
  3. Check the preview

The worksheet updates as you type. Click New version to shuffle the scrambles, blanks, matching order and word search.
  4. Download the PDF

Download PDF saves the worksheet with a Name and Date line and the answer key on the last page. Copy as text puts the same worksheet on your clipboard.

Subject teachers

Revise the key terms of a science or history topic with a matching exercise and a word search.

Why use this Vocabulary Worksheet Generator?

A weekly spelling or vocabulary list turns into a worksheet in the time it takes to paste it. Pick the activities that suit the class, see the sheet as you type, and download a PDF with the answer key on its own page. The same list gives a fresh version with one click, so a second group or a retest does not get the same puzzle.

The Vocabulary Worksheet Generator turns a word list into a printable spelling and vocabulary worksheet. Paste one word per line, add a meaning after a colon if you want a matching exercise, and choose from five activities: scrambled words to put back in order, missing letters to fill in (the first letter always stays as a clue), match the word to its meaning, a word search with words running across, down and diagonally, and tracing rows for handwriting practice.

The worksheet appears as you type, and New version reshuffles everything from the same list. Download PDF gives an A4 sheet with a Name and Date line and the answer key on its own final page. Everything is built in your browser; the word list is not sent to FindUtils. For number practice use the Math Worksheet Generator, and to drill the same words on screen, make a deck in the Flashcard Maker.

Tips for better vocabulary worksheets

  • Keep a sheet to 8 to 12 words: enough practice, short enough to finish in a lesson.
  • Write meanings in the learners' own level of language, not dictionary wording.
  • Use Missing letters for spelling patterns and Match definitions for meaning; they practise different things.
  • Click New version to give the retest a different arrangement of the same words.
  • Word search grids grow to fit the longest word, up to 15 letters; longer words are listed under the grid instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What activities can the worksheet include?

Five: Scramble (the letters of each word in a new order), Missing letters (about two letters in five replaced by blanks, never the first), Match definitions (words on the left, their meanings shuffled on the right), Word search (a grid of 10 to 15 letters a side with the words across, down and diagonally) and Trace (each word in dotted letters with a line to copy it). Pick any combination.

How do I add meanings for the matching activity?

Put the meaning after the word on the same line, separated by a colon, a tab or a spaced dash: "octopus: a sea animal with eight arms". Matching needs a meaning for every word; if some are missing, the tool names them and offers to switch matching off.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. The PDF ends with an answer key page: the unscrambled and completed words, the letter for each match, and the row, column and direction of every word in the word search. You can also open the key under the preview.

How many words can I use?

Up to 40 per sheet, each up to 30 letters. Words can contain spaces, hyphens and apostrophes. A word too long for the word search grid (more than 15 letters) is left out of the search and listed under it.

Can I make different versions of the same worksheet?

Yes. New version reshuffles the scrambles, the blanks, the matching order and the word search from the same list, so two groups, or a test and a retest, get different sheets.

Does it work with languages other than English?

The activities work with words in any alphabet, and the word search fills its grid with letters taken from your own words. The headings on the sheet are in English.

Is my word list uploaded?

No. The worksheet and the PDF are built in your browser and the words are not sent to FindUtils. The same generator is also available through the FindUtils API for people who want to build sheets from code.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up and no limit on how many worksheets you make.
