Why use this fraction calculator?
Fraction arithmetic goes wrong in two places: finding a common denominator, and reducing at the end. This tool does both with exact integer arithmetic, so one third plus one sixth is exactly one half rather than a decimal that is almost right. It shows each step, which is the part that helps when you are checking homework rather than just needing the answer.

What input formats are accepted?
Whole numbers (3), simple fractions (3/4), mixed numbers with a space (2 1/2), negative values (-2 1/2), and decimals (0.75), which are converted to an exact fraction.
Why is the answer exact rather than a rounded decimal?
Everything is computed with whole-number numerators and denominators and only converted to a decimal at the end for display. A floating-point calculator gives 0.49999999999999994 for one third plus one sixth; this gives 1/2.
How does it simplify a fraction?
It divides the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor, found with the Euclidean algorithm, and moves any negative sign onto the numerator.
How do I convert an improper fraction to a mixed number?
Enter it and leave the second value empty. The result shows both forms: 7/2 also appears as 3 1/2.
Why can I not divide by zero?
Dividing by zero is undefined, so the tool reports it rather than returning infinity. A zero denominator in an input is rejected for the same reason.
