Avatar Generator

Beta

Make an avatar from a name or an email: initials on a colour, or a mirrored block pattern. The same input always gives the same avatar. Download it as SVG or PNG.

Style

Up to two letters from the name, on a colour picked from the name.

Shape
Preview256 × 256 px

Type a name or email

On this page, the avatar is made in your browser and your name or email is not uploaded.

How each style works

Initials

Takes the first letter of the first and the last word, so a one-word name gives one letter. The background colour comes from the name.

Identicon

Turns the text into a 5×5 grid of blocks that mirrors left to right, in one colour. It shows no letters.

Download

SVG stays sharp at any size. PNG is drawn at the size you pick: 64, 128, 256 or 512 px.

How to make an avatar

  1. Choose a style

Pick Initials for letters on a colour, or Identicon for a block pattern.
  2. Type a name or email

The preview updates as you type, at full size and at 32, 48 and 96 pixels. Choose the shape, the font for initials and the PNG size.
  3. Download

Press Download SVG for a vector file or Download PNG for a picture at the size you chose.

Common use cases

Default profile pictures

Give every new account a picture until the person uploads one, made from the name they signed up with.

Comment and team lists

Tell authors apart at a glance in a list, with the same colour for the same person every time.

Design mockups

Fill a user list or a chat in a mockup with avatars that look real without using anyone's photo.

Test fixtures

Get the exact SVG for a name to check an avatar component against in a unit test.

Why use an avatar generator?

A new account, a comment author or a team list needs a picture before anyone uploads one. An initials avatar or an identicon fills that gap with something people can tell apart, and because it is made from the name or email itself, the same person gets the same picture every time without anything being stored. This generator makes both styles, each with a colour taken from the input, and gives you an SVG or a PNG.

The Avatar Generator makes an avatar from a name or an email address in two styles. Initials draws up to two letters, the first letters of the first and last words, on a background colour taken from a SHA-256 hash of the input. Identicon draws a mirrored 5×5 block pattern from the same hash. The input is trimmed and lower-cased first, so the same name always gives the same avatar. Choose a circle or a square, Inter or JetBrains Mono for the letters, and download an SVG or a PNG at 64 to 512 pixels.

No outside avatar service is used. On this page, the avatar is made in your browser and your name or email is not uploaded. The same function is available as the MCP tool avatar_generator and on the REST API.

Related tools: make a placeholder image of any size with the Placeholder Image Generator, a QR code for a profile link with the QR Code Generator, and unique ids for user records with the UUID Generator.

Tips

  • Use the full name rather than a username for initials: a one-word username gives one letter.
  • Square avatars suit apps that round the corners themselves.
  • To get a different colour for the same person, add a word to the text, such as their team name.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Avatar Generator work?

It hashes the name or email with SHA-256 and builds the avatar from the hash. Initials mode draws up to two initials on a background colour taken from the hash, in white or near-black text, whichever contrasts more with that colour. Identicon mode draws a 5×5 grid of blocks, mirrored left to right, in a colour taken from the hash. You can choose a circle or a square, and download the result as SVG or PNG.

Does the same name always give the same avatar?

Yes. The colour and the pattern come from a SHA-256 hash of the text after surrounding spaces are removed and letters are lower-cased, so Ada Lovelace, ada lovelace and ADA LOVELACE give the same avatar, on this page and through the API. A different spelling, such as Ada M. Lovelace, gives a different colour even when the initials are the same.

How are the initials chosen?

The initials are the first letter of the first word and of the last word, so Grace Brewster Murray Hopper gives GH and a one-word name gives one letter. For an email address only the part before the @ is read, and anything after a + is ignored, so [email protected] gives AL. Accented letters and letters from other alphabets are kept, and digits count as letters.

Is the identicon the same as GitHub's or Gravatar's?

No. The identicon is FindUtils' own scheme: a 5×5 grid whose left three columns are set by the first 15 bytes of the SHA-256 hash and copied mirror-wise to the right, in one colour from the hash. It does not reproduce the identicons of GitHub, Gravatar or any other service, and no outside service is called to make it.

Should I download SVG or PNG?

SVG is a small vector file that stays sharp at any size. PNG is a picture at the size you pick, 64, 128, 256 or 512 pixels, with a transparent background around a circle. The SVG names the font of the initials, Inter or JetBrains Mono, and a device without that font shows a standard sans-serif or monospace font instead; the PNG has the letters drawn in, so it looks the same everywhere.

Does an identicon hide an email address?

An identicon shows no letters, but it does not keep an address secret: anyone who types the same email address gets the same pattern, so it can confirm a guess. Use it as a picture people can recognise, not as a way to hide who someone is.

Is my name or email uploaded?

Not on this page. The avatar is made in your browser with JavaScript and the Web Crypto API, and the name or email you type is not sent to a server. The REST API and MCP tool are a separate path: a call sends the input you include to FindUtils over HTTPS, where it is processed and the result returned. FindUtils does not store that input, and logs the request without its content.

Can I make avatars from a script or an AI client?

Yes. The same function runs as the MCP tool avatar_generator at mcp.findutils.com and on the REST API at api.findutils.com, with the arguments text, mode (initials or identicon), shape (circle or square), size (16 to 1024 pixels) and font (inter or jetbrains-mono). It returns the SVG, a data: URL, the colours, and the initials or the 5×5 grid.
